Estepona creates a green zone in Cancelada
Cancelada is fast becoming one of the more popular residential areas on Estepona’s New Golden Mile. In recognition of the area’s environment, which is highly regarded for its access to beautiful hiking routes, Estepona’s mayor, José María García Urbano, recently announced that the town hall is allocating 26,000m2 of land to create a new green leisure zone.
This development will include a seven-a-side football pitch and provide a recreational area with gardens, plus bio-sustainable circuits. Alongside this, Estepona council is also planning a new green space of 14,000m2 in neighbouring Bel-Air, which will run from Bel-Air Avenue to Brijan Road.
When announcing the plan, the mayor told the press that the football pitch would have artificial turf and that it would be part of a sports arena environment with pedestrian access, street furniture, lighting and garden areas. Access to these facilities will be free and they will also be used by students at the Cancelada school, which is nearby. The council also plans to provide changing rooms for those using the new sports facility.
The second part of Cancelada’s new green zone will consist of about 7,500m2., which has been landscaped with gardens and trees. This meeting point for residents will feature games tables and outdoor furniture so that visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Guadalmansa River valley.
The third area of this new space will be converted into a large public park planted with Mediterranean vegetation and include walking and running tracks. The main feature of this park is that it has large areas of grass, where residents can also walk or have picnics. In addition, there will be a children’s playground, a petanque pitch and areas for outdoor gymnastics.
These new leisure facilities are all part of Estepona council’s plan to promote the zones outside the main town and to add more public services and facilities in areas like Cancelada. As the mayor said, the town’s slogan is “Estepona, Garden of the Costa del Sol,” and its council has already been working on the creation of green spaces in the outskirts. He hopes these will improve the Estepona landscape overall and that various activities, such as tree planting, landscaping and scenic lighting installations, will continue to improve the New Golden Mile and visually connect its urbanisations.
