Marbella’s Starlite Festival puts the town in the spotlight
The stars are shining in Marbella as once again the red carpet has been rolled out for the glitzy Starlite Festival. This year the event is as glamorous as ever and puts Marbella exactly where it likes to be – centre stage in the spotlight. Featuring big name acts – the 2015 line-up includes Lenny Kravitz and Lionel Richie plus the familiar faces of Julio Iglesias and his heartthrob son Enrique – it has rapidly become one of those events that define people’s perception of the town.
When outsiders think Marbella, they think glamour, and that is one commodity the Starlite Festival supplies in abundance. Gathering to view the acts throughout the month long festival are a host of famous names, celebrities and the glitterati of Marbella society. And what makes Starlite stand out is the fact that the famous faces on stage don’t just stay there; many of them join in the party to have a drink, a dance and dine.
Some of the other leading performers are Laura Pausini, Placido Domingo, Roger Hodgson of Supertramp fame, flamenco dancer Sara Baras as well as party favourites the Village People. There is no denying that Starlite brings a boost to Marbella – to the tune of €60 million of local spending according to a PricewaterhouseCoopers audit.
The Starlite Festival, although only first held in 2012, has rapidly become one of the main social events of not just Marbella’s calendar, but that of Spain. It is the perfect fit for the glamorous world of the resort town, with its millionaire lifestyle, super yachts and super luxury villas and apartments in exclusive residential areas like the Golden Mile. The concerts are held in an old quarry converted into the Marbella auditorium, called Cantera de Nagüeles, at the foot of the Sierra Blanca mountains, close to the luxury homes of nearby Sierra Blanca, Nagüeles and the Marbella Hill Club. The setting makes for a unique and intimate atmosphere.
This year’s festival runs until August 22, when tenor Andrea Bocelli, who has sold 150 million records in his illustrious career, brings the curtain down.
The paparazzi will be out in force for the Starlite Gala, the main charity fundraising night of the event, and always a magnet for some of the biggest names in the showbiz world. It is on August 8 and will, as per tradition, be hosted by actor Antonio Banderas.
